What is Pest Control?

Pest control involves regulating or managing a species, specifically insects that adversely impact human activities. The human response depends on the extent of the damage and ranges from tolerance, through deterrence and management, to attempts to completely eradicate the pest. Pest control measures may be performed as part of an integrated pest management strategy.

Pest control coverage

  • Cockroaches: These resilient pests can spread diseases and trigger allergies. Common types include the German cockroach, the American cockroach, and the Oriental cockroach.

  • Ants: While many ant species are harmless, others, such as fire ants and carpenter ants, can cause painful bites or structural damage.

  • Termites: These destructive insects can cause significant structural damage to homes and buildings, often unnoticed until extensive damage has occurred. Subterranean termites and drywood termites are common culprits.

  • Bed Bugs: These nocturnal pests feed on human blood, causing itchy bites and discomfort. They are notoriously difficult to eradicate without professional help.

  • Fleas: Commonly found on pets, fleas can also infest homes, causing itchy bites for both animals and humans.

  • Ticks: Lyme disease is commonly transmitted by ticks.

  • Centipedes: Centipedes are elongated segmented (metameric) animals with one pair of legs per body segment. All centipedes are venomous and can inflict painful stings.

  • Millipedes: The word “millipede” translates to “a thousand feet”—but while millipedes have many feet, none of them quite have a thousand.

  • Woodlice: Woodlice, also known as pillbugs, sowbugs, or slaters, are terrestrial crustaceans, not insects, and are closely related to crabs and lobsters. Woodlice prefer dark, damp environments and can be found under stones, logs, and in compost heaps.

Pest control methods vary depending on the insect and the severity of the infestation, ranging from chemical treatments to baiting, trapping, and biological controls. The goal is to safely and effectively manage pest populations to protect human health, property, and the environment.
