What is a German Cockroach?

The German cockroach is the most widespread species of cockroach worldwide. Although they can infest various places where people live, they are most commonly found in restaurants, food processing facilities, hotels, nursing homes, and other institutional buildings. Continue reading to discover more about these cockroaches and find information on how to control them.
German Cockroaches
Adult German cockroaches can be identified by their light brown to tan coloration, featuring two dark almost parallel stripes on their backs. Female German cockroaches tend to have a darker appearance compared to males. The nymphs of German cockroaches are dark brown to black in color and also exhibit the same dark stripes on their backs. Despite having wings, German cockroaches rarely fly and instead prefer to run.
German cockroaches are more likely to live in warm and humid areas near sources of food and moisture. Infestations of these pests are commonly found in kitchens, both in residential and commercial settings, as well as in bathrooms. Droppings from German cockroaches can often be found in the areas they frequent.
Droppings look like small, dark pepper and can be seen on different surfaces like countertops or inside storage compartments. You might also find evidence of fecal staining, indicated by dark spots or streaks in the corners of rooms, along the top edges of doors, or near hidden cracks and entry points.

When there are many German cockroaches, you might notice a slight, somewhat musty smell.
